Hey everyone, just joined today, hoping for some feedback. We have had chickens for all most a year now, many trials and tribulations but finally have a lot of things figured out. I am looking for some immediate guidance, my wife is out of town and by default I am taking care of our chickens, and unfortunately there was an attack this afternoon I believe by a neighborhood dog, we lost 2 but i have an injured hen with difficulty breathing. She has a pretty bad wound on her back, and is struggling breathing, have isolated her in a crate with water. She seemed to be walking around ok before I removed her from the coop. Sprayed the wound with blu kote. Just looking for some care guidance through the night. She has water and is in a dark, warm spot but I will do whatever it takes to keep her alive. She is my wife and daughters favorite so doing what I can to get her back to health. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you added electrolytes/ sugar to the water? Seems like you have a good setup. Picture of the wound might be helpful.

Welcome and sorry about your hen. Treat for shock with either electrolyte water or offer her water with 1 tsp of sugar per cup. If the wound is on her back, that is where the lungs are located. Are there any deep wounds from fangs? Pictures are helpful if you can get some in the AM. Dogs can squeeze them, and that can cause internal injuries. I would spray some Vetericyn, saline, or dab on some Hibiclens and water to disinfect the wounds. Apply plain Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment twice a day. BluKote is for minor wounds, or to hide red skin so they won’t peck at it. I have had 3 different hens jump my fence into the yard with our dog at different times. The one with no marks died in an hour. The ones who lost feathers and looked rough did fine. Time will tell if she lives, but I certainly hope she does.

Hello and welcome- and hoping your hen will heal well -
