My 5 year old Rhode Island Red hen is very sick. A few weeks ago she started moving slower and eating less. Through the past few weeks I’ve given her medicine for coccidiosis, worms, a warm bath for a stuck egg and she keeps getting worse. She’s hunched over and now loses her balance a lot. I have never had a chicken sick for so long as typically it lasts less than a week. Quinn has been ill for about five weeks now. Please help. Is she just getting old or is there more I can do???

First, she should be separated and kept in a quiet area so that she can relax and so that you can monitor her input and output.
What are her symptoms?
How long did you treat for coccidiosis?
Have you tried any vitamin supplements after the corid treatments were done?
What did you use to treat for worms?
She is older as far as chickens go, but she must have a lot of life in her if she's been going through this for 5 weeks.

Thanks for the response!!! I treated for cocci a few days. A few years go she had it and was treated for the recommended time. Also, when she was two she was sick from an egg issue and stopped laying since then. I put probiotics and electrolytes in her water as well. Also, a few days ago I found a soft shelled egg in their coop. It was at night so there’s a chance it was her because the other chickens lay in the morning. However, I am not sure. It seems like it would make sense for the egg to have been hers but she also hasn’t laid in three years. I used a pellet dewormer i got at tractor supply to deworm. She has barely ate/drank water the past week. Any ideas on what’s going on? Or any suggestions on what to do next? ❤️

Coccidiosis needs the full treatment which is 5 days of offering her the treated water made fresh each day. If a severe infection, there should be another round given at a lower dose.

I read through your other threads. Did you treat her with the calcium supplement as recommended?

Please put her in a safe quiet area to make sure she is eating and drinking. You could give her some nutri-drench or poultry cell in the water (as long as you aren't adding corid). Offer her some scrambled eggs.

With all that you've tried at this point she should be seen by a vet. She should not be allowed to continue to suffer.

I have had her in a separate area for around two weeks where I monitored food and water intake. Recently, she hasnt been eating or drinking. Since the other hens are not sick, she is not contagious. She loves her two sisters and kept trying to get back into their coop. Considering she wasn’t eating or drinking anyways, I put her with the other two chickens. I have offered her eggs and calcium and she will not eat either.

She is suffering. She is trying to hide her suffering. Please seek a vet if you can.
