My four year old jersey giant hen was fine, apparently, this morning. She and her flock free range all day, and I don't recall noticing her during the day. When I went to lock up, and do final bed check about 40 minutes ago, she was lying on her chest, just outside the door to the coop. She was conscious, then, but obviously very Ill. I have brought her inside, and now she is utterly limp, and barely breathing. She feels kind of hot, but it is a hot night. Every once in a while she let's out a soft coo.
Her butt is wet, but it does not seem to be egg. I have felt her mostly all over, but can't find any clear injury. She is so out of it, I wonder if she would alert me if I found a sore spot.
I looked up egg bound, but all of the symptoms presuppose a conscious, mobile bird. I do not want to go traumatizing her with an invasive exam if it is something else. Her comb and wattles are a nice, healthy-looking red.
I am at a total loss! What do I do? What do I check for? I feel horrible taking the time to write all this, even, because I feel like she is almost gone! I can't stand it! I just love this bird! Can someone help? Give me some idea how to help her, please?
Thank you!!!
