Hello, I'm hatching eggs for the first time, and the first 2 that hatched knocked the other eggs around. One of them externally pipped (I found it that way when I woke up this morning). The pip in the center of the egg, the portion that is now pointing down. I could hear it peeping lastnight. It was screaming pretty good a bit ago, so I decided to gently pick the pieces of shell from around the pip. There were some blood vestles/viens still active so I didn't go any further. When I just checked a few minutes ago, it looks like there might be some exposed bone visbile through the pip area int he membrane. That part of the membrane is also turning grey.
The egg is in the incubator and I wrapped it in a damp paper towel. Should I do anything else?! 😭

Hi @HMoody and welcome to the BYC community!

I would take away the wet towel as it can prevent the chick from getting enough oxigen thus rendering it too weak to hatch. Instead you can put a bit of vaseline on the shelless exposed membrane to keep it from drying out.

As chicks are very cramped inside the egg, they will take many hours to complete the turning for the complete zip. While doing so, you may see a toe or other body parts peeking through the hole which is normal.
Chicks can take up to 24 hours to hatch after externally pipping, so keep calm and sit on your hands as trying to help them prematurely when they are not yet ready (they absorbe the remaining yolk and their navel closes up) will expose them to severe infection and death.

Thank you. The little one passed during the night 😔.
