Hi everyone,

First time hatcher here and my silkie eggs are on day 18 today! I locked down this morning and noticed one had an external pip with an intact membrane. Now, 17 hours later the membrane looks the same (a little bloody maybe??) and I’m not observing any changes to the membrane.

My question is should I be concerned that there’s been little progress made? Could it be shrink wrapped and in distress? How long should I wait before panicking? Humidity is at 80%, but I had trouble bringing it up all day and it stayed at 55% part of the day.

Picture for reference. Any feedback/advice is appreciated!

Thank you in advance

I’d leave it, my quail rarely make an actual hole, just a tiny crack or flake off a bit of shell but it is enough. You can actually cause bleeding rupturing the membrane too early. I do make an exception for backwards chicks (pipped narrow end). I’ve also had chicks go 60 hours pip to hatch so don’t panic! Also, way more often than not, if a chick can’t hatch there’s a reason, don’t assist if you don’t have the heart to watch your rescues die or can’t put them down if necessary. It’s hard, but you are responsible for these little lives. Happy hatching!

Thank you for your advice! I can see this morning that he/she is making progress, there is a bigger hole in the shell and a few cracks in the membrane where I can see the beak moving!
