Sad story. I've been losing birds to an unknown illness. Finally decided to have one sick bird euthanized and sent in for neceopsy to save the rest of the flock. I accidently had the wrong one euthanized (so mad about that) and the actual sick died two days later (which was yesterday). I used FedEx to ship the euthanized chicken Thursday because the lab said to use FedEx. Today they pushed very hard about what I was shipping so I had to tell them. He refused to ship it :barnieI told the man they just shipped one Thursday and the person from the lab said to use FedEx, and he simply said "Well, we weren't suppose to" and sent me on my way. :rant

What can I do? I don't know how to ship her now and it needs to be done soon. Please help!

Sorry that you had to deal with that. When I spoke with my state poultry lab, they said to use Fedex or UPS overnight shipping. That is what others use as well. I would call the state lab and explain what happened. They may be able to give you a shipping label and charge it to you.

Thank you everyone. I will try again tomorrow. At a different fedex location.
I've never been asked what I was mailing. That's really weird. Closest thing was "Liquid, fragile or perishable?" What the heck is he doing interrogating you about your mail?

Yeah, if you get a prepaid label and just drop the box on there it will go smoother. Don't have to draw attention to the fact that you're shipping it to a lab and get their curiosity up. :smack

Yes I was very heated when I left there. I didn't even tell him where I was shipping it yet. As soon as I walked up there holding the box he asked what I was shipping...and I had her in a cooler inside a cardboard box so they wouldn't ask questions!! I tried avoiding the question and answering vaguely but he just persisted in specifics. So angry. Praying that all goes well today.

Also I happened to find from another lab's website, and coincidently on FedEx's website which I happened to print off to show them :)yesss:), that I am legally allowed by federal law to ship biological substances through FedEx, Ups, and Postal Service, as long as they have the proper UN3373 Biological Substance label and are packaged accoridingly concerning biological substances.

So...I am going to package appropriately and try to go the discreet route again, but if they happen to persist I will whip out my official UN3373 label I printed off and the info about it from THEIR website, and not leave there til my poor bird is shipped

“Medical equipment”

The other option is if the bird is under a vets care, the vet can package it, fill out the paperwork and call fed ex for a pickup no questions asked. The vet will contact u with the results.
If it’s a vet that works with the state lab for any kind of testing, they should know the drill.

Thank you! Unfortunately the only vet that will accept a chicken around here is clueless when it comes to chickens and I'm not sure I would trust anything else they would do. I'm praying it all goess well today. I have a game plan now thanks to all the responses :thumbsup

You got the wrong clerk. My vet school uses fed ex to ship dead animals all the time, including dogs and cats.
In fact, when I have a bird die, the diagnostic lab sends me a FedEx label for the purpose.
Package it right, have the label adhered and drop it off. No questions asked.
I believe I will have the lab send me the label if this ever happens agains. I don't have the time wait on it now though because we weren't able to refridgerate her, she's just been kept on ice in a cooler since saturday so time is crucial!! But that sounds SOOO much easier. Hopefully there won't be a next time though....
