I have noticed I have raccoons wandering around and I don't want them around my chickens.

I was thinking of shooting them but then that seems like a waste. So I was thinking of capturing them then shooting them during the day so the chickens can feed on the raccoon.

Is there any issues with feeding chickens raccoon?

with any wild animal there is a risk of parasites. if shooting a raccoon is what you need to do to protect your chickens I think most chicken keepers wouldn't really consider that waste.

maybe do a round of diatomaceous earth if you decide to feed it to them

D.e doesn't do anything for parasites, unfortunately, that's a common internet myth.

I've had success with treating a hen with DE in the past. she was lethargic and I found worms in her stool. after some time of treatment she perked back up and had normal stool again. I use it mostly as a preventative now. :))

D.e only works in environments less than 65% humidity.
The inside of a hen is not below 65% humidity. D.e doesn't work at all when wet.
She still has worms, if you saw worms in poop, that means there are so many that there's no room left and they were looking for unclaimed area.
Get some valbzen and dose all you birds, asap.

Thanks for the info! This was quite a while back (over a year) and my flock is fortunately healthy and I have confirmation of no parasites! :) I wondered what happened, I will definitely look further into this because its very interesting! :)

to add on to that, it's very strange that she was the only one to become infested so there was probably something else going on with her. I also started giving her immune boosting supplements when i noticed her infestation so maybe that helped. Other than that I haven't had too much experience with worms.

edit: I think I know what happened. A lady with a very small flock gave me that bird as she was giving away her flock. it was in with my other birds for no longer then a few days before I noticed it was unwell. I can't believe I didn't quarantine 🤦‍♀️ She must have given me an infested bird she didn't want to deal with. this would explaine why my other chickens were spared from infestation. I free range most days so they were never confined to a run together. Still, very lucky they didn't get worms.

Depending on where you live, I would shoot them, and in my case, I can toss them back in the woods on the back end of my property! Just be aware tho, if caught, they may get you for not having a trapping permit, but that would not that stop me! Time it correctly, and you can toss them in your trash! Nobody traps anymore, so they have become a major problem, along with the damn coyotes!
