Feeding Chicks

We made a feeder for our chicks(they are four weeks old) and they keep wasting all the feed. The feeder works the way it is supposed to but the chicks always scratch out all the feed and waste it. Is there a better way to give them feed that doesn't require buying something? The only feeder we have is in with our layers. Please don't say that we should have another feeder for them because they would scratch out the feed in a real feeder just as much as the one we made.

Sorry I didn't get to it yesterday. I think they finally figured out how to eat from a feeder without spilling or something, because they aren't spilling today. I am crossing my fingers that it stays that way. If you still want to see a picture of the feeder though I can still put one on here.
