Hello,

Yesterday we noticed our female duck Keisha has a big lump on her head (it doesn't look big in pictures, but it's about half an inch high). It's also causing swelling around her eye. We think this happened from the boys trying to mate with her (We now keep her separate from the boys except for her two soul mates, who protect her and chase the other boys away).

What's the best treatment for this? Warm compress? Cold compress? It's not an eye infection or respiratory (only one eye is impacted). Thoughts?

Today I was looking at my Runner who has been healing from the drake grabbing hold of her head she has a scab with feathers missing but today it didn’t look right so I decided to peel off the scab and when I did a bunch of thick pus came out with the scab left a good size hole that I packed with Triple antibiotic ointment @BoradorBeans how is your duck today?

Hi all, sorry for the late reply. We kept her inside for 24 hours and she was so happy. A/C, quiet, and a place to sleep (at the foot of our bed in her diaper... lol). I used a warm washcloth for her bump only once and after 2 days it was nearly gone. The drakes are all separate from her.

About her 2 soul mates... it's really weird, but the three of them grew up together and the two boys don't seem interested in mating with her at all. I wonder if they know she can't lay eggs? She had surgery a year ago that prevents her from laying, due to a serious health issue. She acts like an old duck, but she's only 2. Instead, her buddies occasionally mate with the two other females we have (if they let them. They're feisty.). I work from home and sit by the window overlooking our yard, so I watch them most of the time. I don't always see everything, hence her poor bump on her head. She does seem very distressed when she's not with the 2 boys though. She doesn't care for the other girls much.

We rescue ducks, most of which are dumped males. The boys (other than her two buddies) are in their own section of the yard and have their own hutch at night.

Thank you all for your comments! Keisha is the queen of our house, so when she's happy, we're happy.

Posting the original photos here just as an FYI. They didn't attach in the first post.

Hi Borador Beans, Miss Lydia directed me to your post. I have a rescue muscovy duck who is nearly a year old. She ate a metal staple, no idea where she dug that up (she is contained in her own area). Avian vet saw her, put her on meds in hospital with syringe feeding and I brought her home on Tuesday to see if she would eat on her own. She is not eating and not improving. I asked about surgery and the avian vet said it is a very complicated procedure and most ducks do not make it, he did not recommend it. I can't give up on her. I was wondering if your duck's surgery was considered difficult and how she fared? Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated. thank you, sad and sleepless in Florida
