We have three guinea fowl, two males and one female, we started with more but lost two :-(

They hatched last spring so I guess the female will start laying sometime soon. She has started to get much more vocal recently and the buck-wheat calling is driving me nuts! Do they call more at this time of year or is she likely to carry on like this forever?

I know this is kind of crazy but has anyone ever managed to 'train' a female to stop calling soo much????

I have noticed that we have less ticks this year but I recon we could do to get a few more birds to really clear the garden of bugs. Do you think the birds we have will accept new keets easily?

thanks

Hello:

Some Female Guineas just like to Budk-Wheat ! Sorta like a rooster likes likes to crow.
If she has her head up and sorta standing at attention, she is nervous and on alert.
This will make her call louder and more often.
Over time, she may become less tense with her surroundings and calm down.
You get used to it though. I can go to the barn and tune the guineas out.
It is sorta like.... Hey guinea, how can you stand that constant YACKING ?
I would relpy, what YACKING ?
Guinea G.

We started out with two adult blue pearl guineas last year. Later on that year in the summer, we purchased four pied guineas. After they were about one half the adult guineas' size, we put them together. The guineas and the chickens have always lived together, but we are planning to put them in their own enclosure soon. It is too crowded with the guineas in the coop now because they have grown up.

Mine hate the snow--I'll open the pop door to let them(and the chickens) out to get some exercise and sun but the guinea hens just stand by the door and complain. Also I have 6 hens but my neighbors have 3 cocks, so when mine stand there and call, the "neighbors" come down for a visit. Then all Hell breaks loose, it's a wonder my neighbors on the other side haven't complained.

BTW, I kind of like listening to them.

Thanks for your replies, I think I'll just see how it goes and how long it takes for the neighbours to complain. :)

I have four guineas, three males and one female. She just doesn't shut up! She is headed for the crock-pot soon if she doesn't quiet down. They are driving us all insane. Thank heavens we have no neighbors, but once we open the windows, it will be even worse. I wish they would roam farther from the house, but they stay with the flock of chickens and love to play in the mulch under the living room windows. grrrrr

Just hang in there, it is my experience that once she chooses her mate that she will quiet down some. My two hens screamed their heads off until they chose mates and it is now much quieter.

One of our males flew into next doors land and the dogs got him. Our female went nuts for about a week but she seems to be calming down a bit, saying that she does have her moments

Our group spreads out into "families" as they go on bug and seed checking missions. If they accidentally get separated from their chosen mate this season, they will NOT shut up until back together. However, the ones I keep penned as breeders seem to always talk- particularly the girls! (no comments here guys!)
FINALLY starting to get a few eggs! YEAH!

We still haven't seen any eggs yet, keeping our fingers crossed that we will soon
