Fencing Staples

Regarding my future run fencing, I'm thinking that I will do the lower 3 feet in 1/2" hardware cloth and from 3' up to 6' in 2x4 welded wire. I'd put a board around the entire run at the level the two fences meet and then just staple both fences to the board. I know I could use the U shaped fence staples that you hammer in with a hammer but could I use the kind of staples that you put in with a staple gun or would they not hold good enough? It sure would be quicker to be able to use the staple gun if they would be secure enough. Thoughts or experiences???

Staples tend to pull out of wood more easily than screws as the wood dries out over time. Whatever you use, inspect the fastenings regularly so you can spot a weakness before a predator does.

Could you not just lace the two sections of fence together using wire?

Regarding staples, I use an air nailer, with galv. 1.5 inch staples. Then at intervals of about a foot or so, put in fencing staples with a hammer, 1.5" or so. It just makes it easier to install if you use an air nailer. If you dont have one, then you could just use the t-51 stapler and then go back and put the U shaped staples after, then you dont have to try and hold and hammer at the same time.

Not from a regular staplegun, absolutely not.

I have heard that there are stapleguns that fire much larger staples that may be ok, but that's not something you are likely to have access to.

So, really, either proper hammer-in fence staples or screws-and-washers or screw thru a batten. (The latter might actually be a good option for a looong seam like you will have)

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
