Hi all,

My birds free range, although they have been confined to their run the last week to let a food plot germinate (they were eating all the seeds). My Isa brown started laying, but when we tasted her egg(hard boiled), it was not great. My neighbors eggs taste amazing and his birds don’t even free range.

i was still feeding starter/grower and have changed to layer pellets. My neighbor also feeds corn scratch (not sure if it’s only corn or mixed with something).

I read online that adding more protein to our hens’ diet can make for a tastier egg.

thoughts?? What do you feed your layers?

Thank you!

My hens have a varied diet of layer feed, treats like scratch, mealworms, fruits and veggies, and they also have access to anything that they find free ranging. Ours are tasty in my experience, but mine have been laying for a long time and I don't hard boil any of their eggs.

How was it 'not great'?
Just below your expectations or nasty tasting?

I feed a 20% Flock Raiser with Oyster Shells in a separate feeder for the active layers calcium needs. I also give a bit of scratch grains(8% protein) daily. My birds are confined.

Below expectations. Maybe a bit bland? I did pick up some scratch to add to their diet today.

I can NEVER get the shells to come off my fresh eggs when I hard boil them!

What was the temperature like in your nesting boxes?

I have started using my Instant Pot on either the steam or egg function. I do them for 2 minutes, NR for 3, then QR the remaining steam. From there, they go into a ice water bath where they sit for a while. This process works the best for our eggs. I most always get them to peel (even on eggs that were laid 'today').

Fresh eggs are very difficult to peel.... what we do, is keep the eggs we want to hard boil for 3 weeks out on the counter. Then wash and hard boil (insta pot works awesome), and the shells peel off beautifully.

I feed Purina layena layer pellets and a little scratch each day (as well as free ranging in the evenings) They also get boiled eggs occasionally and any kind of house scraps. My eggs taste great. The only difference i’ve noticed is when I change feed brands.
