Hi, I will be getting chickens for the first time sometime next week. I have already learned so much from this forum. I will be getting 6 dual purpose chickens. We want them for the eggs. But my husband wants them for stew after they quit laying. I don't know if I could eat it or not, knowing that I raised it and love it. I'm sure I will love them. I was thinking about getting a Black Australorp, Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, Easter Egger, Speckled Sussex and possibly a Silver Laced Wyandotte. I would like a a variety so I can tell them apart. They will mostly be in a chicken run, with some time running around the yard once we get the stuff to section off part of the yard. My only concern is will these chickens be able to fly over a 4 foot fence? Their run will have a roof on it. I just want to keep them safe from my dogs, when they are out of the run.

my egglayer birds can fly over a 6 ft fence but not my dual-purpose birds, so I think you should be fine. you also could trim their wings (I know to some people it sounds cruel but it's not!)Hope this helps! here's a video if you want to do that:

A good breed to keep in mind is ISA Browns they are good layers and their friendly not good for meat. If you let them out be sure there's a roof over them cuz I had one get eat by a dog that's unknown and one of my girls got killed buy a Hawk

WELCOME TO BYC!!! :welcome 🥳🎉:welcome

Welcome to BYC! Glad you are here! I agree with what several others said. We have 6ft fences but if those were only 4ft, some of our dual purpose breeds could fly over them. The wing clipping is supposed to work well. We haven’t had to use it… yet.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

My only concern is will these chickens be able to fly over a 4 foot fence?
Yes. And clipping the wings does not always work. My birds were clearing a 4.5 ft fence without issue. I had to clip some into the secondary wing feathers to keep them contained.
