Helloooo everybody!
I'm preparing for my first set of birds, and I wanted to get signed up ahead of time, just in case I, and I assume I will, have questions during the process. Thankfully I have parents who have raised chickens before, so with them and websites like this one, I'm not entirely blind.
I live in the Central Valley of Northern California, closer to Sacramento, than Fresno, right in the HEART of the state. So heat is more of an issue than cold; however, it does get pretty cold at night during winter, I mean I get cold, so I figure the chicks will too. So I've invested in a nice big heat lamp for the night time hours, and I have a nice safe place in the garage for them to hang out in or I believe it's called "brood". I'm only using a couple Rubbermaid totes that are good sized to start them, and I'm in the process of building a coop. One tote is much larger than the other, to ensure they have space when they grow.
I forgot to mention I've got 4 pullets on order/reservation at the feed store. Two weeks until they're supposed to come in. 2 Rhode Island Reds and 2 Buff Orpingtons. My parents are familiar with the Red's and I just really like the way the Buff Orpington looks so I requested those. Very small, but again I've never even held a chicken, so this is going to be quite the adventure.
I think that's enough for now, I have a propensity to ramble on. So I'll post some pictures when they arrive!
Thanks for reading!
Peace & Love from California,
Christopher G
