Hello! We have two sets of Pekin ducks that live in the pond behind our house. We live in a typical residential neighborhood in Orlando, FL.
I’m sure one of the neighbors likely brought these 4 ducks at some point. We consider them to be wild but they obviously have their routines and live in the neighborhood.
There was an original set of Pekin ducks that were killed several years ago by some “evil” ducks that just flew in and stayed a week and left. It was heartbreaking to our family as we loved watching them. Now that there are two new sets of ducks (they’ve been here a few years now) we watch them and occasionally feed them and now find ourselves with front row seats to a mama duck nesting in our front yard bushes.
We have set up cameras to help alert us to predators (there have been many) to hopefully increase the chances the mama will hatch her eggs so we can watch baby ducks grow and add to the duck family.
It’s kind of exhausting really, but we have daughters who are watching along with us and participating by spraying water over the duck in the hottest parts of the day so mama duck won’t have to leave.
Always happy to receive advice and links to help us understand how to help, or not help, this nesting duck and the other ducks in the family.
Thanks!
