Fresh Tree Stump Grindings in Run?

They will incorporate with mud to turn into more mud, if you already have mud. If your run is nice and dry and stays dry you may like them there.

They are great in the nest boxes! (Kind of like the pine shavings you can buy.)

Of course you want to make sure they don't have termites in them or something.

Since it poured last night, I do have mud in the pen. And wet grindings now. The grindings are a mix of dirt and tree stump, so I don't think that would be good in the next boxes...

No termites. This tree was stuck twice by lightning in the last three years, was dying and too close to the house for our comfort. A huge branch came off and landed literally inches from the back door.

I use sand in my nest boxes and coop floor- free is good, if you have something available free on your property to use as a substrate for nesting or bedding materials. A little dirt wouldn't stop me from using something. But definitely use your judgement.

I have tried to burn that stuff in the woodstove and it is a pain, having to churn it and it flies everywhere- wouldn't recommend that.

Well, now I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it... Hubby and I looked at it tonight and there's already a swarm of what looks like sweat bees around it. Don't want that in the run or the coop...

Give it a few days and see what happens....and/or.....put a wheel barrow full in the run and see what happens.

I think it would be fine...but that stuff is hard as heck to move, can't really shovel it, garden fork or pitch fork kinda work...I moved a bunch of it years ago, ain't fun.
