fuzzi's Chicken Journal

While I was cleaning up the last green bean vines, I uncovered a couple small sweet potatoes from the adjoining bed. I wound up digging up the entire crop!

All this from two tubers, store-bought I think. They're now in the shed to cure, hopefully.

Changed leg bands on the OEGB pullets last night, after dark. I was wearing my red light headlamp, and Julia and Dinah fussed some but were mostly compliant. However, Phoebe screamed and fussed as if I were torturing her.

Then they needed comfort after the ordeal!

Ms. Phoebe had the strongest objections to the Red HeadLamp’s eating of her leg!

Exactly. It's a "set it and forget it" method of cooking.

And "Crockpots" can be purchased cheap, in thrift store or at flea markets, too. One of mine is more than 25 years old, maybe 30. My MIL gave me hers, she didn't use it. The insert is removeable for cleaning, which is a must. My big slow cooker has been serving me well for almost as long. I've used it to cook a ham, bone in. I can also fit in it all the bones from an 18 pound turkey, after stripping off the meat. Add water, a few peppercorns, a splash of apple cider vinegar, cover and cook on low for at least 12 hours. Adding a couple beef or ham bones makes a richer stock.
And get an oval, rather than a round. It works better for chickens, roasts, etc.

I have an oval and a round crockpot. The oval is my favorite.

I used my oval this year to cook down some tomatoes into paste for canning. I didn't have to stand over a pot stirring. Took some time but I didn't have to worry about them scorching.
I will aways use this method in the future. It worked great!
