Earlier today I noticed one of my three Gambel's quail (a hen) limping and holding her leg up. Gambel's quail are very skittish so I was unable to see what was really going on before she ran into their "cave" but I did notice her foot was swollen. I waited till nightfall to capture her and bring her inside. This is what I find (in the photo). Obviously an injury to the leg. What is really concerning me though, is her foot is greenish, blackish. Is that gangrene setting in? Or could that be bruising? Infection? What's your opinion? I rinsed and flushed the wound real good. Administered oral antibiotics, which I had on hand. And wrapped it. I should of added neosporin to the wound, but I didn't think of it at the time. I plan on searching for an avian vet tomorrow morning as I'd like to save her, even if it's going to cost me some $$$, as I love all my birds! Hopefully I will be able to find one who would see her. The only way I think she could of sustained this injury is that an animal could of tried to pull her leg through the wire (had recent predator problems, skunks) or my husband said he accidently spooked them a couple days ago and it sounded like one of them hit the side of their pen real hard. Gambels are very flightly birds and are known for spooking and getting themselves injured.
