Hey there!

I'm considering having some geese (2 or 3 to start I think will work), since I need some "security help". I've been robbed many times and my old dog didn't hear anything (he's 12 years old). I tried to introduce him a new dog, but he was agressive and than very very sad, so we had to give the new dog away.

I'm wondering if I could have these new geeses free in the yard, just as a dog ? Do they need a coop? I don't know if this is a silly question.. but don't they fly away?

They are a lot different than a dog, I had two geese for awhile the male was very aggressive to most people and they would both shriek if anything got anywhere near them, I’m not sure they would scare off a burglar they usually keep their distance unless cornered. They grabbed my dogs and my pants a few times and left a nice mark. Is your dog okay with geese? More than likely he’d be even more aggressive to a goose than a dog and I’d hate for any of the geese or the dog get hurt due to the other.

*If you do decide to make sure you get a thick meat goose so they can’t fly c;

Hey Chirehe!

Thanks for your advice!
I'm not sure if my dog would be ok with geeses, I don't think he likes them free on he's territory..

I thought my old dog would not be a threat for the gooses (he has almost no teeth left) and he (my dog) would may be a bit agressive at first, but the gooses would defend them selfs as a group and eventually this situation would stop :D
What do tou think about this? Sorry if my english is not clear enough.. :idunno

Could you retire the dog to a privileged place in your living room and get a new LGD who would stay outside?

Hard to say whether dog and goose would get along, but if it doesn’t work out you could always get a new home for the goose... or invite it to Christmas dinner. I’ve read that Buff geese are a good choice for guards—friendly to people big and small. If you get only one, make it a female. The boys (I’m told) get randy and could see your poor hens as prospective mates if there are no girl geese around. Gander anatomy doesn’t gently mesh with that of chicken hens.

Hi Cindy!

Thank you very much for your help!
I think you are right, if it doesn't help I always can find them a new home. About inviting them to Christmas dinner I don't think it works for me.. I do eat meat, but I can't eat my own animals, I just love them all :love

Have a nice day ahead!

Your wanting geese to protect your homestead right? Chinese geese would be your best bet. What are your predators like? If you haven’t any you could keep the geese penned during the day when your dog is out and let them roam your fenced property at night. But if you have predators then even geese won’t last long. as for the geese and your dog are you getting goslings? You could slowly introduce your dog to them so he gets use to them. My two geese tried to bully our dogs so I had to train the geese to leave the dogs alone since one of my dogs got tired of being nipped on the butt and grabbed the gander around the neck. Thankfully that is all she did she didn’t bite down. But you’ll def have to work on that relationship between the dog and geese. They do need shelter from severe weather a place to get out of high frigid winds and a secure area if you have predators. I read once that a prison had a gaggle of Chinese geese inside their perimitor at night to deter escapes how true I don’t know but a gaggle of Chinese geese would probably be a force to reckon with.

Actually my predators are people.. Where I live we don't have much "animal predators" as you in north America do, muy chickens are safe in our coop. I want some geese in order to keep thieves out of my property.

You just answered one of my doubts that I forgot to mention.. I was not sure if geese sleep all night long as chicken do or if they would be alert at night.

Thanks!
