Getting rid of Gapeworm!!! The quick solution

So I have a Guinea hen 5 months old and on Oct 18 2021 we found her laying on ground head tucked. She seen us, took two steps toward us and dropped. Gape worm. We tried Ivermectin for goats paste. It worked except it take
Fenbendazole to kill adult. Which is active ingredient in vilbazen, Safegaurd and another one. We had already tried so many things at this point and the price wasn't cheapjj Then I remeberd a old time remedy we were given for canker and he said it would work for worms. At this point, we were pulling at straws so we decided to try it. It's kerosene or lamp oil and a long feather. Stick the feather in lamp oil and run it carefully down chickens throat and pull out. We did the first time but feather barely got in there. We waited a day and a half later at night. it. Wow. I could tell the next morning the worm was gone or atleast dead. Her eating and drinking stopped almost completely for a day or two. Had her back on electro lytes No more sretching or twisting of the neck. Last night we seen what appeard to be a worm. 2 worm together.. so a feather dipped in kersone works. Her food was impacted, she was under weight. She had been infected for a while. Now just get her weight back on so she will have energy to withstand temperatures and vet rx treatments. So a few more days. We did it? We saved her and for that I'm grateful!!

Yikes! Kerosene is jet plane fuel. Petroleum distillates. I've seen very little kill a chicken of mine.

My opinion - old timey remedies may work, but if the chicken manages to survive them, it's pure luck. Personally, I wouldn't take the chance when there are easily obtained safe treatments out there.

The post above, number 1, contains a lot of incorrect information. Was the diagnosis of gapeworms confirmed by a vet with a fecal float? Gapeworm is rare. I would not ever give a chicken kerosene with a feather. There are numerous good safe chicken wormers. Fenbendazole 10% horse paste or liquid goat wormer (SafeGuard/Panacur) will treat gapeworms if given 0.23 ml (1/4 ml) per pound orally for 5 consecutive days. Valbazen which is not the same as fenbendazole, will treat gapeworms if used 0.08 ml per pound given once and again in 10 days. Re-treating is how to get the eggs. Chickens may get reinfected easily if droppings are not kept cleaned up and the bedding kept dry. Free ranging on grass also helps.

Respiratory diseases (viral, bacterial, fungal) are frequently mistaken for gapeworms because they can cause gasping and gaping. Get a fecal float to see if your chicken has gapeworms. If your chicken has sneezing, drainage from a nostril or eye bubbles, you are probably dealing with a respiratory disease. What color were the two worms that you saw?
