Today I discovered one of my Black Sex-Link hens has scaly leg mites. It's only her, and no one else seems to have them, but I'll be treating them all just in case. It's fairly recent, as her legs don't look that bad at all compared to some I've seen on here, but I wanna get this treated ASAP! I know how to treat scaly leg mites, and that's not a problem for me. I'll be picking up my needed supplies tomorrow.

However, I know I have to thoroughly clean out the coop as well. Are there any products you recommend for getting rid of scaly leg mites in the coop? Like are there any particular sprays and whatnot for this? Preferably poultry safe ones! Thanks in advance! :)

Also out of curiosity, where do scaly leg mites come from? Surely something had to have happened for her to get them so suddenly since she's been fine for years and has had no issues otherwise.

Hi, I had an issue with scaly leg mites as well. They come from wild birds and animals that visit your yard. The way I found to best kill them/repel them was to:
1.Treat all of my hens
2. I then cleaned the coop of all of its bedding and wiped down all surfaces with vinegar (I even sprayed the ceiling)
3.I sprinkled D.E throughout the coop and sprayed it with a homemade mint, cayenne Pepper, and dawn dish soap water spray.(cayenne also helps keep raccoons away)
4. I added new clean bedding and sprayed the coop twice a day with the homemade spray for a week.
I haven’t had any mites return and I spray the coop about once a week now.
(I also had an ant problem by the chicken coop and i noticed that all the ants left! My coop is now ant and mite free!)

Awesome, thanks for sharing! I'll go out and get the supplies for the mix tomorrow.
What kind of mint did you use though? Like peppermint oil or? I wanna make sure I get the right stuff lol.

How are you planning on treating the SLM? Oil, vaseline?
It would be good if you put some oil on all your chciken's legs this will smother the mites.

SLM are transmitted from wild bird and other animals. They do live under the scales on the legs of your chickens, but can migrate around a little.
Clean your coop out and treat it with a Permethrin based poultry spray or dust. You can find these at your local feed store. You want to get this under control as quickly and efficiently as possible.

I have used ivermectin, not on my birds for leg mites, but a few years ago a neighbor's birds were infected with the leg mites so I treated her birds. I spray my coops with Permethrin spray. I had mites several months ago and initially treated my coops once a week then every other week. No more mites. I live in North Central Florida. Lately we have been having above normal temperatures and a couple weeks ago below average temperatures. Today it's supposed to be around 80 degrees out.

I was actually looking at the same link you had posted! I plan to go with option 4, Gasoline and A&D ointment treatment. I'll most likely be treating them Sunday, as I'll be able to have my dad help out. My mom is terrified of my birds lol so she's not an option

Is it possible for rats to carry them? I had an ongoing battle with rats in my coop for a little while (but luckily that battle has been won!), and I hadn't had this problem before the rats moved in, so I wonder.
Thank you for the advice/photos! I'll head over to TSC and pick some up.

Sounds like you have a plan!
Yes, rats can carry parasites, I'm not sure about SLM but it's good that you were able to get rid of them.

Sorry for the late response, I used peppermint essential oil. Are you still having a mite problem or have you been able to treat it?
