I have a couple of week baby goats and they have lice or mites. I have garden grade DE, Safer Brand is the brand name. I won't have food grade until next week when it comes in. Could I use the garden grade to dust the babies or is there anything else that I can but that is safe for week old kids?

Thanks,
Dean

Livestock insecticidal dust is OK to use on kids.. I've used it on scrub goat orphan kids that were just a few hours old to kill lice.

If you've got Ivomec, that'll take care of it too. I usually give Ivomec 1% injectable orally for internal parasites, but I actually inject it if I suspect external parasites.. Some folks give it orally for both. Dosage is about 3ml/100lbs. With them being so small, though...I'd probably just use the dust and hold off on the Ivomec until it became absolutely necessary.

You can get the dust at TSC and places like that for about $5/can. It's just permethrin, really...same stuff that comes in wasp spray, etc..

Thanks so much. I cleaning out the barn now and putting the DE on the ground before laying new straw. I'll go to TSC in a little bit, I think they have Python Dust. I just read online that Python dust is ok for any age animal.

Python will work.

There's another product called CyLence that's a pour-on...or, well, a drip on in the case of goats I suppose.

It's a permethrin like Python and the other dusts, but liquid. Dosage is like 1ml/20lbs of body weight, dripped along the spine.

Still..in babies..I'd go with a dust. Seems gentler, somehow..
