I'm new to owning chickens, and 2 months ago, my husband and I went to look at the chicks at the loclal feed store, "for fun." Husband has a soft heart, and was upset when he saw the runts and sick chicks, so, on an impulse, he bought all the sick ones. Five made it, and one didn't.
I know my four beautiful white ones are pullets, probably Brahmas. But the runt has bewildered us all! He looks like a road runner with blue feet! He is also a lot 'wilder' than the four girls, which makes me think he is a male?
Does anyone know what this is? He's 8 weeks old.

Yes, I believe male, you can see the start of the spiking saddle feathers.

As to breed, I am not overly familiar with the Appenzellers other than what I can read in the breed book.

Check to see if he has the "V" comb, which is essential for the breed.

His color might be Chamois Spangled, although he seems to have too much white...but he is only 8 weeks, so that may fade away with molt.

But as he is only 8 weeks, and will still be growing the male feathers, I think he may have to much crest for an Appenzeller, which makes me suspicion he has something else in him, like Polish. He doesn't match color type well for Polish yet...and he may be hatchery quality or a mix...but he may closest to a Buff Laced. Time will tell.

Feathersite has some good photos to compare:

Hopefully someone with hands on Polish or Appenzeller experience can chime in. :D

He looks more like a Buff Laced Polish to me. Appenzellers aren't all that common, especially not the rare varieties. It would be very unlikely to find a Golden or Chamois Appenzeller at a feed store. Therefore, it is more likely that he is a Buff Laced Polish, since they are relatively common.

Hello!
I think you're right about the breed, and the sex- he's starting to act very rooster ish!
I panicked a little when I realized he was a rooster, but now am going to try to handle him a lot more so maybe he won't be so mean when he's older?

I googled those pictures, and you may be right! I don't know! He's much smaller than the pullets, and really lean! He flies around more, too! I'll post another photo as he grows!

A few years late here in response. I have this exact same bird....

So, was he a "he"? Or was it a girl with a feisty attitude?

I was thinking Chamois Appenzeller Spitzhauben, but the crown is very big (her poof is about twice your size!) Maybe buff laced polish is right?

That's a Buff Polish.
