I am totally new to chickens. These are my first 6. I think I might have a rooster.

Here are some pictures of the chicken I think is a rooster from what else I have seen on BYC.

I am not sure that I want a rooster. First, I don't think I want to deal with the crowing. Second, I heard they can get pretty mean even though it is a nice bird right now. Third, what is a rooster good for if I don't want to have baby chicks?

I would LOVE thoughts on if it is a rooster and also, if it is why I should keep it or get rid of it. Ironically, my husband named this bird Supper the first day it came home. Might actually come true. :) Not really, I think I have a friend who might take it.

How long to I have to wait to be sure if it is in fact a rooster, what are the tell tale signs?

Thank you!

He is a cockerel. I just want to say that all roosters aren't mean. I have a Jersey Giant which is one of the biggest heavy breeds birds, he is huge and he wouldn't hurt anyone. We can even pick him up . He is 2 years old so not a baby. Mine crows whenever he feels like it thou, it can be morning noon or night, but it doesn't bother me or my neighbors. I would hold on to him and see how things go.

Sorry, but there's no way that's a hen. Comb/wattles are huge and red, and his hackle feathers are looking pointed. Besides that, he's huge compared to his friends. I think the other golden laced might be a rooster, too, since it's wattles and comb are red. But I'd watch that one just in case.

I too am new to chickens and have some GLW's. Mine are 8 weeks old and were supposedly sexed and all hens. None of them have that developed of a comb or wattles yet, so I'm thinking you have a roo. But as I said, I'm a newbie so that's just my two cents! good luck!

Our rooster (around 15 month old black cochin) alerts the hens when he scratches up something yummy. He also alerts them of danger (the little lap dog who is deathly afraid of him or the cat who couldn't care less about chickens :) ) He crows whenever he sees someone or something or like another member said whenever he wants. We have him dance he was a day old. Good luck with your babies

Rooster for sure. It is your decision as to whether you keep him, but I personally enjoy roosters in my flock. They're very entertaining to watch and usually guard the hens well. But they do crow whenever they want too (not just in the morning), and that can become annoying. A few are aggressive, but I've never had a rooster in my flock that was aggressive, at least once he passed the age of about six months. Before then, their hormones are ramping up, and they often become a little pushy.

So was it a rooster or not? I am going through this right now with my SLW, I think one may be a rooster also. Here is a picture. Also this one has had a bigger comb from day one, and started getting wattles at about 3 weeks old. They are 10 weeks now.
