gout?
It breaks my heart to think of putting him down, but I know he's in more pain than he shows.
He's healthy otherwise.
Just the swollen leg and his comb is paling in him.
Gout started in leg and foot that were broken in dog attack that almost killed him one year ago.

Vet here isn't aviary trained and he's at a loss too.
Can some one help my Phillip?

Tagging some of the experts. Hopefully they can help you :) Good luck with your boy!

Gout can be from too much protein. Cherries come to mind when dealing with gout in humans. Let me guess that he is an inside bird?

It could be gout. Has he had a high protein diet? Thirty percent protein feeds can produce gout. If he's had a steady diet of electrolytes over time, it can cause gout. Lots of salty treats cause gout. If he's had a history of that stuff in his diet, then you have a higher chance of this being gout.

The treatment is vitamin A and a low protein diet, avoiding calcium and other minerals, especially salt. And lots and lots of filtered water.

I have a human husband with debilitating, severe gout, and it breaks my heart seeing him suffer, let alone a poor bird!

For your precious friend, you can give him 2 tart cherry tablets dissolved in a tablespoon or so of water every day until the swelling goes down, then a maintenance dose of 1 daily. The goal of any gout treatment plan is to lower the uric acid levels. The high concentration of uric acid is crystallizing in the joint and causing the pain and inflammation. If you are someone who takes poultry to the vet, they can prescribe allopurinol as well. No idea on dosage of that for chickens; husband takes it for his gout.

Best wishes!

I know this is an older post but did you figure it out? I have a rooster with gout. Still looking for a remedy. He has the one that is not visceral, the name won't come to me. OK I remember....articular gout
