Hi Everyone.

I swore I saw someone mention using a granite slab (in run or coop - not sure) for chickens to rest on when it was hot out. The premise being that the granite would stay a bit cooler and help cool the girls down when very hot.

I am considering this, one for in the coop and one for the run.

What do y'all think about this idea (the good, the bad and the ugly).

Thanks in advance.

It's not that it stays cooler, it draws heat out when they are on it. You could use tile or granite, I remember seeing something about tile.

It's the same when you stand barefoot on a tile floor, it feels cold because it is drawing heat out. Not necessarily because it is cooler, it may be the same temperature that the room is.

Google, why does tile feel cold.

I use terra cotta saucers from pots in my rabbit cages. They lay on them, and I can also put ice packs underneath. I have not heard of using granite, imagine it would work as long as it was in the shade. I use an old raised planting box full of peat and sand as a dust bath but it also stays cool so they dig into that. And a kiddy pool with about 2-3 inches of cool water (changed daily). They stand around in it!
