my neighbor's coonhound female got his great dane into running the countryside. the coonhound has disappeared, but the dane keeps comin up here lookin for her. if he keeps running someone will put him down, as wandering dogs are tolerated out here by farmers. if i keep taking him back he'll just keep showing up, so i'm considering keeping him. seems like a young dog, acts like a big baby and is real trusting. first time i saw him goin down the road i stopped the truck and called his name out and he came right over to me wagging his tail. opened the tailgate and he hopped right in for a ride. that dog had never seen me or my truck before but had no fear or mistrust towards me.

just wondering, anyone have experience with whether or not danes get along well with chickens? do ya think he'd learn to guard the chicken yard at nights?

We don't have a great dane but I know a lady that has a great dane and she has no problem of them being with her chickens, doesn't bother her girls atall.

We has a female Dane a few years back we rescued and she was the sweetest, nicest lap dog of all time. She has No sense that she was big. She did accidentally kill a maltise just through size difference. She just poked it with her nose. I have yet to see a mean Great Dane (but only have met a few) but would not have another with small pets. I would think that my full-size chickens would not have a problem, but chicks could easily get poked or sat on.

My daughter has a Great Dane, and it was around her chickens, and mine. It never bothered them. She'd sniff at them, and show a little interest, but was so much gentler than my little dog, who wanted to kill them. The Great Dane just stood by and watched them. She didn't even charge at them.
I think their size might be the only concern, just them accidently squishing a chicken, or if, as a puppy, they do that paw- hitting thing..

We have a Great Dane/Plott Hound mix. He was a year old when got him. He wanted to chase the chooks, but we told him 'no' twice and have had no problem since and that has been nearly six years.

We have a great dane and he has been fine with the chickens and with the cats that we have. i would watch them closely around chicks though. They are very curious and even just licking a chick could cause it to go bye bye. lol. Anyways, they are a wonderful breed!!

I am sure he will be fine with them, they are such sweet dogs.He might accidentily step on them though. That's what our giant Golden Retriever does. He is 110 pounds. He is such a clutz

He does chase them, as well as the poor cats. He is a very bad boy

Thanks for the advice everyone. Well I decided to take him back, turns out he's the man's granddaughter's pet (her family lives on the same tract of land). But told them to keep him tied if they ain't outside.
