This rooster was wandering around the barn and found it's way over to my chicken run, with 5 RIR hens. He's been very sweet to the ladies and seems to have mated with one. I've seen some mean roosters and was trying to avoid it, but this boy seems very nice. I'll try to get another photo that shows his colors better - he's a beautiful various shades of grey, with light yellow accents. He's a bit more narrow than my RIRs and a bit taller. Does anyone know about his breed - mix - or any typical traits (good egg layer, etc.) Thanks!

Mixed breed rooster, I agree he's light bodied so maybe some game or leghorn.........can't really tell much from the pic but I'd imagine he's scrappy and will make nice egg laying chicks, eating birds not so much.

He does look a little game, though they don't produce a heavy roaster type bird, they are still tasty (like pheasant) and carry very little fat, if thats important to your diet. And most can be tamed easily....I've not yet ever been flogged by a game roo.
