Hi all, we got three chicks yesterday and I have some sand from Home Depot, is it okay to give that to them as grit? If it is, should I put it in a container or sprinkle it on the bottom of the brooder?

Why would they need grit? If you have them on starter crumble, no grit necessary.

Just me, but I've found that if I soak the crumble and let the water drain, then fluff up the moistened crumble (it becomes fine food, almost like wet dust), that is an excellent way to start them feeding. They then quickly can move on to the dry crumble in the next day or two.

How large are the sand grains? You want this size range for chicks:

I want to start feeding them scrambled and boiled eggs (mashed up of course).

I do something like that. I just squirt in some of their vitamin/electrolyte into the food and it turns it into crumble pretty well. Also, they love it.
