Hi!
We are moving to Montana soon, and I have no expirence with gardening out there. I have always lived in Pennsylvania.
Does anyone have any advice with gardening in MT? Also, I would like to grow some of my own chicken feed.
Is the soil rocky in Western Montana?
What type of grains are popular to grow there? Like, when you're driving around, what do you see? I was thinking of growing soybeans, barley, wheat, oats, alfalfa, or corn or something along those lines.
Please tell me what to grow or what not to grow. Also if you know some good varieties of any heat loving veggie (tomatoes, peppers, etc.) that grow well there.
Thank you so much!

Go to Montana Department of Ag website, check it out.

Look for the county Agricultural extension office -they are very helpful with these kinds of questions specific to your area.

On BYC, Go to “Socisl” > “ where am I, …”. To the pinned post for all the states. Find Montana and post there!

Also, there could very well be fb pages for farms or gardening or chicken keepers in Montana, so do some searches there.

If you go there this summer, find some county fairs to attend in your area. They will have lots of Ag stuff on display and you may get further info.

Thanks for the tip!

I only know that the growing season is shortand corn doesn't do well. I think afalfa does fine but that is the extent of my part-time Montana resident knowledge.

I know that I have great luck using farmers almanac as a guide. I remember my great-grandfather using it way back when, and that man had a green thumb!

Sometimes long cool/wet springs, hot dry summers, and a fast fall. What part of the state are you trying to get to?
