I have two Ayam Cemani eggs which made it to full development, and today is Day 22. The first one started hatching about 24 hours ago and still seems like it’s got a ways to go. I’m worried because the position it’s in seems a little unnatural. I’ve circled the beak in red- do I need to worry about this?

The second egg has no signs of piping, do I need to be worried about this?

Has that first baby been in that position for more than 2 hours? Once they start to zip it shouldn't take that long for them to get out, most of my babies are out within a half hour after they start zipping. If the baby has been stuck like that for more than 2 hours I'd try to make sure the little one isn't shrink wrapped. Helping too early is dangerous but usually once they start zipping it means they are ready to come out and if it's taking more than a few hours to zip it may need your help.

Since your other egg hasn't externally pipped yet it should be safe to get the hatching baby out. of course helping or not is a personal decision, but from what I've seen if the chick makes it to zipping helping shouldn't hurt it and may very well save it.

I hope your other egg is able to pip for you soon, it may just be a little behind, good luck!

@LynnaePB @Fairyloop5 The chick had been stuck in that same position for about 6 hours so I'm really glad I got your advice! This is my first time ever incubating eggs so I was really hesitant to help it hatch but it was for sure the right thing to do! He was stuck in there so so bad and was almost completely dry when he finally got out! Also, the inside of the shell was completely dry. I don't think he would have lasted through the night if it wasn't for your help! Now he's getting fluffy and laying by the other egg. I'm so excited about it! Hopefully the other pips soon!

Congrats! It sounds like the poor little one might have gotten shrink wrapped, I'm so glad to hear you were successfully able to help! She/he is adorable! :love

Oh and good luck with your other egg! Here's an assisted hatching guide I find really useful in case you ever find yourself in another situation where you might need to help. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/guide-to-assisted-hatching-for-all-poultry.72886/

With your first baby hatched it probably wouldn't hurt to candle your remaining egg (as long as it still hasn't externally pipped) to see if it's internally pipped and alive and then go from there. :)

I just candles the egg and it has for sure internally piped. Should I be able to see the beak moving if it’s alive? So I need to make a hole in the shell for air?

When I candle and there is an internal pip most of the time I will see some movement, occasionally I don't though and the chick is just resting but is ok.

Adding a small hole at the top of the air cell (a safety hole) is something I personally would do at this point since your egg is as late as it is (I've seen some who are really against it but I've had luck with it in the past). I'd also tap the egg to see if I could get a response from the chick inside (movement while candling or peeping to try to help confirm it's alive). If you aren't seeing any movement the little one may have run out of air after internally pipping and passed. I hope that is not the case though and you get another little one to hatch!
