So - I have had 6 chicks fully hatch within the last 48 hours. 1, however, pipped about 36 hours ago and has been struggling. It’s been doing the “biting” motion which led me to believe it had yet to absorb the yolk/blood vessels but the membrane had dried significantly around the pip hole (it had slightly started to unzip, probably about 1/2” opening all around). Anyway - this morning I removed it (using 100° water to mist it) and peeled a bit of the shell back thinking I’d try assisting it but the veins were still very large and red. Almost like it’s a preterm chick? So question number one is: Why would it try hatching if it wasn’t ready? Anyway - my husband beat me home and decided to attempt to assist the hatch again before I got back with our little one so as to not traumatize him. I will attach a photo of where we are now (again hour 36) which leads me to question number two: Has anyone seen this before or have any advice? Trying to decide what to do here.

Update: hatched it the rest of the way. The blood on its back is leftover membrane. Head is remaining very tucked under the right wing. Is this a birth defect? Any help or advice greatly appreciated. It is still cheeping.

I’m guessing he’s deformed, hard to tell but if he can’t get his groove together after a couple hours prognosis isn’t great, sorry!
It has started to move a bit - disconnected from the parts that were still attached after hatch. Seems very weak. Just opened its eyes and is still peeping. The thing I’m confused about is its feet. They keep twitching super super fast and then will quit and then it will move and they’ll start again. What is the cause of the incessant twitching? Any ideas?
