Hello!!:frow I haven't posted in over a year, oops! Last time was about my silkie rooster, who still has no interest in mating and probably never will... :barnie:old
So now on to my story, we decided this year to buy fertilized silkie eggs to put under our broodies. We got 6, on day 14 I discarded 2 as there was no sign of life. I opened them and nothing appeared to be developping at all. Last candle was day 18 all 4 of the eggs that were left were viable. On day 19 the egg pipped!! Unfortunately the morning after we found the egg and it seems like it had been crushed by the hen as one side was completely broken (not like zipping should be) I opened it and it was a fully developped chick but the yolk had not been fully absorbed.
That same day (20) another egg pipped, under the 2nd hen (Indie). I was scared but the next morning I checked and there was no change, though I could hear chirping! It finally hatched at 2p.m, 24 hours after pipping. :jumpyIt was very traumatic at first as Indie pecked it hard on the head and it was flopping everywhere. Pompom, the hen who was sitting on the crushed egg, came out calling to the chick. As Indie didn't seem to understand what was going on, we placed the baby under P. all she done was turn in circles. We decided to take the chick in the house to get fluffy, which it did. That same night we got a chick from the store, because being slightly older and stronger we wanted to see how Pompom would react as she was still searching for her baby! She accepted the chick, I called her Hope. So today we have given her the baby silkie too and she's a natural!! She may have got flustered before. But we have 2 eggs left under Indie, it's day 22 and I'm scared they may not hatch because it seems so long since the first chick pipped. I candled them tonight and the air sacks are HUGE but no internal pips! Any suggestions? Is waiting the best thing to do?

try floating them. Its when you put the egg in water to see if the chick is alive inside, if the egg moves, the chick is alive.

I was thinking of that but dunking the eggs terrifies me:thI might give them a bit longer, maybe until day 24 to try this. Thank you!

Thought I'd do an update!
Well, on day 25 the 2 other eggs had still not hatched so I candled and one of the eggs had a small airsack, the chick also seemed small. I opened it up, carefully, it appeared that the chick stopped developping around day 14 or so. On day 26 i opened the second one up although it had a fairly large air cell and was completely dark. The chick was fully formed, but was dead, not sure why it didn't look skrink wrapped. But it's feet were, as far as i could tell, malformed. One foot looked ok and was black, the other had 3 toes instead of 5 and they were pink! So I'm guessing the eggs were NOT good.
As for the hatched chick, which we named Lucky is doing ok (?). I'm a little worried as she/he doesn't seem to be growing much unlike the silkie buddy I bought to accompany Lucky and Hope :hmm (I'll note that the buddy was a little older than my hatched chick and so is Hope) It's also very attached to it's mama.
Finally I have 6 eggs under Peanut, my tiny silkie, all 6 have veins but it's strange because they are extremely dark compared to the first batch which I noticed from the day 7 candling. I'm not sure if this means they have thicker shells and are maybe healthier or the opppsite and worse (these had no dates on them). It's day 14 today and there is one egg I can see veins on but this one is oddly shaped, it doesn't have a 'large' end, both ends are the same side I need to candle it to be able to see the air cell :he
I'm hoping for the best! :fl
