Turned our 7'X14" chain link dog run into a chicken coop, covered the top with chicken wire, 1/3 hard roof for wind/rain/weather resistence and sided half of the back corner & side also for weather protection. Put in two Dogloo houses, ran some sticks through for roosts and am building two 15"X15"X18" nest boxes to hang from rear wall.

We're looking at 2 Barred Rocks, 1 Black Sexlink & 1 Gold Sexlink and 2 Blue Laced Wyandottes. OR 4 Barred Rocks & the Sexlinks.....we just want to make sure they're hearty with our hot summers and cold winters.

Also, any problem putting the brooder in the coop now with a heat lamp? (Large plastic bucket, feeder, water, heat lamp)

Any and all thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks,

The Martin Family kids 7 & 9 yrs

PS
We're introducing Qupid the family Airedale to them as chicks & he's a lover.

I'm in NH, so I imagine our seasons are very similar to yours. We have a HUGE mix of chickens. Tons of Bantams, Barred Rocks, Jersey Giants, NH Reds, Amerucanas, Marrans, Speckled Sussex... the list goes on. LOL They are all well in the winter- occasionally I will leave a heat lamp bulb in when it gets down to negative digits in Jan or Feb(which if you want them to lay all winter you might want to do anyway.) If your springs are like ours here in NH, 60 during the day- low of 40ish at night, then they will be just fine in a brooder in the coop w/ a heat lamp. Good luck and have fun with them!!!
