Heated Waterer?

I've been using the same heater for 6 years. No problem with the unit.


I think it makes the water a little too warm. I noticed my chickens preferring to eat snow when let out so I added 2 of these stacked on top of eachother under the 3 gallon plastic chicken waterer.

I have used this one for three winters and it is still going strong. I also love that I can just leave it in place, pull off its lid and pour in more water to top it up.

Oh, I almost forgot, last winter we also added a heated pet (dog) bowl, I think about a gallon size. I don’t remember the brand and it is still put away for the summer. The chickens seem to like to dip their beaks and drink, though they do also use the nipple waterer. We did cut a circle of bubble wrap style insulation material to float on the water and cut down on heat loss, with a “bite“ cut out of it to provide a hole for the chickens to drink through.

Do you think it's likely that I will have to teach the hens to use the nipple, given that they haven't used it in the past?

I think I showed one or two (“pecking” at the nipple with my finger), and the others followed their lead. There are a lot of threads here about getting chickens to use them. They pretty much all pick it up as far as I have heard, though some of them can seem pretty slow about it!
