Hi everyone. I’ve been lurking, reading and benefiting a lot from this site so thought I’d introduce ourselves to all you other chicken carers.
We got our first chickens on a whim at a yard sale. I know I would not recommend this either 4 Sexlink orange 8 week old pullets. My husband got them at Easter and I was happy enough as we had just bought our first home together and plan to start a small farm. They came in a tiny carrier and only one would come out when we got them home
I read as much as I could about chicken care but 3 seemed very stressed, sick, and subsequently died within a few days before I could get to a vet. The surviving fourth pullet we named Curious Georgina because she is a curious, bold loud girl seemingly scared of nothing (she chased off a large cat successfully). We bought 11 more baby chicks from Tractor Supply to grow up in a baby pen in the coop with her and give Georgina a family flock. They are 3 Smokey pearls, one blue lace Wyandotte (sadly lost her sister) and 6 Plymouth barred rocks. As far as I know all are female. We now have 10 twelve week chickens and our 19 week old yet to lay Georgina. They will eventually probably be free range. Georgina already is -part time. She has adjusted nicely to the flock after some pecking order face offs.
I’m Mother to a calm and trained therapy border collie who is with me all the time and is gentle and good with our chickens.
I work from home so spend most of the day watching the chickens from the deck. I love that I can be here to watch them all day. We are in Nebraska with summer days over100F and extremely bitter winters too. Fixed an AC unit in the coop and we adapted an old shed that was here ( previously used for storage). It’s still in progress but attaching pics.
Nice to meet you all and TIA for having us here. Looking forward to reading your stories and seeing photos.
