My name is Tina and we nicknamed our acreage 'Dingleberry Farm'. That is a story for another day. I found BackYard Chickens looking for chicken coop building ideas. We recently moved to the country in the hopes of raising chickens among other animals. We left the city for many reasons, one being that having backyard chickens was banned there. We are a large family and eat a ton of eggs. We hope to become more self-sustainable and chickens are one of the ways that we want to provide for our family.
I haven't always been a city girl. I grew up on the farm, but we never raised anything other than beef cattle and some barn cats. My husband and I are handy and love learning new skills. We can't wait to start raising our own chickens. Ironically, we live next door to a large chicken farm and can source eggs (at wholesale prices) and chicken and don't really need to raise our own. BUT my heart is set on raising our own flock. My 8-year-old is dead son is set on raising Silkies.
I have been researching everything to do with raising a backyard flock. We live in a cold climate in Central Alberta Canada. A friend is going to help us build a coop. He is a carpenter by trade and can help us build whatever we want. We don't want to spend a fortune and hope to figure out what we want for our flock. The chicken farmer next door is gifting us two small prefab coops (for now) because his wife doesn't use them anymore. I am not sure if they will be more of a pain than anything else, but at least we could get a few ladies right away.
I am eager to learn to raise healthy happy hens and am suffering from decision fatigue. I also don't want to wait until spring to start. I am glad to be here and in the good company of folks who have experience and advice. Thanks for being awesome!
