Hi Everyone! We are living on a part of Big Island with lots of feral chickens running about. The feral cats do a pretty good number on the chicks around here and we've always thought about grabbing a few and raising them before the cats take them out. A few months ago we finally did nab a chick and so began our chicken love affair.

We rounded out the flock with and easter egger/rir, silke/cochin, and a sliver laced cochin all purchased from a young woman in high school who's having fun breeding chickens on her parents farm. The feral chick turned out to be a roo (while there are ferals running about we can't have one as a pet at our rental), and we had to dispatch him a couple of weeks ago (which we did with aloha).

The BYC forum has been such a huge help and I'm learning a lot and looking forward to more. I had no idea these birds could all have such different personalities. I'm amazed at how just my small flock is it's own little soap opera...

Thanks for being here - Aloha

Hi and Welcome! Love the Big Island, you lucky dog!

I didn't realize there are feral chickens there, but I definitely saw them on Kauai. By the way, do folks in your area use volcanic gravel for grit? It was a question that came up a while back. When we buy it here it's granite, but it seems to me that volcanic pumice would be good too. Any idea?

We have a lot of cinder in our yard and they do pick it up. I haven't supplied them with anything since they seem to be getting what they need from the yard. Thanks for the welcome!

Good to know, thanks for the information!
