Hello. Northern IL. Our hen has survived severe flystrike

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Fabulous job saving your hen! Fkystrike is deadly, so many people have no idea how to treat it. Pretty nasty stuff. Feel free to make an article for our Learning Center so others can learn from you! https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

Great job! :highfive: Your flock is in good hands. 😊

Make yourself at home here and welcome to our community!
Does anyone know if we need to report cases to the DNR? Looking up screw flies they developed irradication programs by dropping sterilized males in the south because of herds and flocks being decimated. But I'm not sure what insect caused this. My son sent me a video he altered for our toddler niece. Not sure if this assists in ID.

July 23, 2024. Watching weight. Loss 3 or 4 oz. Normal color and activity. Monitoring bowel function. Sprinkle probiotic on feed. Wound healing nicely.

Nice vet work.
We just lost our mare to colic the week after the flystrike. We were determined to try and save this hen bc we were helpless when the vet gave us no hope. It was a day of surgery for hotses and colic. The closest hospital had 3 surgeries scheduled for 2 vets so our gal had to travel 45 min away. It was a death knell for her. The work helped us through our grieving.

We lived a couple hours from a vet when one of my horses got colic 30 yrs ago and a friend of mine gave him beer. He was better immediately and lived many years after that episode.I wouldn't recommend anyone do this without consulting their vet because I don't know how or why it works but it did.I'm so sorry for your loss and hope you hen continue to do better! You did a fine job vetting her!
