hello I had recently posted about my salmon favorelle who cant stand on her feet. its been a few days and she has become more alert. Day 1 she very exhausted and tired. we thought she overheated..we fed her some yogurt the firs day because she wouldn't eat solid foods..same happened the next day..then we gave her some rice and she ate that the third day...big improvements on the third day. she could get up but couldn't really stand. she would collapse within 2 seconds.. before she couldn't even move.. but that's an improvement. i think it is day 4 now..but she is back again..getting worse..she can hardly get up anymore..and she kinda makes a sound as if she is in pain. we are starting to think she broke her leg on one side because she leans on one side, its apparent..when I pick her up then set her down...her whole body will tilt on one side and the other leg is almost paralyzed...the only think i noticed better bout her feet is I can bend her toes now..when i touch them..on day 1 her toes were so stiff..both of her legs were..I don't know if she is healing or not...hopefully..she doesn't want the yogurt anymore because she pulls away every time I try to give her some...now she has her regular feed in a bowl next to her with water.. She will use the wing on the side she is leaning on...to help push her up on 2 feet but she cant...water doesn't drip out of her beak(or nose?) anymore, that was on on days 1-2.
Symptoms: Day 4
1. still cant stand up
2. leans on one side
3. squints
4. makes a little noise as if she is in pain or bothered. not too loud
5.looks limp
6. Had diarrhea that was brown first couple of days now it is green.(stinks)

we checked for bugs, no bugs.
no problems visible on the outside I don't know whats wrong and how long she can live.
Cant go to vet for personal reasons..please help

she looks like she has meriks but the day it happened she was running and everything the day before and all the other days before it. It doesn't just happened in one day.

It DOES just happen in one day! :barnie Maybe not the Marek's itself, but the flaring of the tumors that cause the paralysis.

I truly suspect Marek's... as indicated by the paralysis and green feces. :(

However, NO scabs on the feet are not normal, can you post a pic of those?
:fl

Hello Eggsighted, thanks for replying. I think she just was sick from a parasite or something. She hops when she tries to get up now she can get up now but she hops in a weird way. She is getting better. Is mereks curable because she is healing, I can tell. And today she is pooping solid feces. Just like my other chickens. Also with mereks, the eyes change in some way but her eyes look normal. They say the feet often look like splits but her feet look fine she is just leaning on one side of her body and using her wing on one side to push her back to balance as is if she’s is injured on that leg but I don’t see it externally. About the scabs, they were more like calluses and light pink red blotches It looks way less worse than how I had put it, sorry. I cannot post a photo at This moment because I will make noise trying to go out(kids are asleep!) I will though, tomorrow morning. I do have a few pictures from a few days ago though, it’s hard to tell. I will post more tomorrow! Sorry about the long posts btw. No worries! Thank you so much for trying to help me! It means a lot ❤️

You can’t tell but she is using her wing on the opposite side to keep her up. The side she used her wing to balance her is the side she is weaker and leaning on and the foot visible in the photos is foot that is strongest

I wanna be clear that I am NOT saying it is Marek's... but some birds will never have any eye changes. Symptoms can present differently for each individual. The chick I culled for Marek's lived two weeks before I saw ANY change to the eyes. And some never will have eye changes. YES Marek's birds CAN heal (I use the term loosely because it can flare back up) and recover. It happens plenty, some strains are more or less virulent than others.

Here is a symptom checker tool. You put the symptoms in and it gives you the possibilities it could be for you to reason through. Only thing is they keep updating it, and I didn't even see Marek's listed as a reason for limping, so maybe they are working on it right now but it does for green feces. :hmm One thing I do like about it is that going through the symptom list helps give me clues to look out for. Things I might not have realized were a symptom of anything...

Whether it was an injury or illness, I MIGHT try a chicken sling to get weight off that leg but still give a chance for stretching and maybe even practice putting weight again. Here are some examples...

Yes, she doesn't look like exactly what I saw with Marek's (assuming that's what I saw since I didn't get a necropsy done), but again all individuals may present slightly differently and maybe not even all the same symptoms.

Other possibilities are zinc toxicity, lead, or other toxin. Some deficiencies can cause these types of issues... Did I already ask what you feed regularly including treats and supplements? Even though most your birds may be fine, sometimes there is something genetic underlying that makes an individual not thrive as well as others even with the same care.

Hope this helps some and that she pulls through for you. :fl

It sounds like she had a stroke, but I’m not sure if that’s a thing with chickens or a symptom of something else? Just throwing the idea out there.

If she doesn’t make it, and I sincerely hope she does, I would strongly recommend sending her to a lab for a necropsy so you know what you’re dealing with.

She died a couple months ago..she had gotten better..and a couple weeks later she died even though the day before she was fine! I miss her so much..
