Need help asap as this morning I discovered 1 of my hens has maggots all over her vent. How do you cure this? I have searched all morning for videos/information and have not found anything. Please someone help as I dont know what to put on there for now. 3 years ago I believe one of my hens had it and she died: I had had that one soaking in water as thousands came out and she started having panic attacks and died so I'm afraid that if I soak this one, the same thing could happen.

So far I have thrown diatomaceous earth on her vent and have sprayed poultry spray/water back there.

This is called flystrike, and can be deadly if all the maggot larvae are not removed immediately. I would soak her in warm water with Betadine, or dish soap. If you have a permethrin spray you can also spray that on to immediately kill any remaining maggots. Some use Vetericyn. Maggots can still hatch out for about 24 hours, so this may need to be repeated. Use a weak Betadine or Hibiclens with water to spray and disinfect the area. Flystrike can occur when there is a wound, a prolapse, or soiled vent when flies are present. I hope you can save her. This is a good article that has info on treatment:

I just had a chicken die from this. Soak her butt! In warm water. Put like 3 drops iodine in the water each time you chnge the water. There is also these white pebblle like salt things to add. when shes out of the water scrap some gentley of the side but dont go in her. Her vents going to bad no mater what but if it's torn and eaten at the sides its already too late.
