I really hope someone can help! I don’t know where else to ask!

We tried to band our male goat but it’s gone all wrong and I don’t know what to do. This is my first experience with banding.

He’s 5 months old and we kept waiting and waiting because his testicles are very small. But finally we decided we were just going to have to do it. I had both through the band last week when I banded him. I checked and double checked. Both were definitely in.

Today I checked and both have slipped out of the band (like I said. He is very tiny). So now what!? Can I re-band over the testicles, just higher up? Should I remove the band that’s just on the scrotum? If so, then how?

This is such a nightmare and has me so stressed out. Please, any advice would be truly appreciated.

If you can get a band above the testicles and have enough scrotum to allow the band to close fully, it’ll be ok.
What band are you using? If they are old or are for cattle vs sheep they may not function like they should. I would put two on if you try it again.

I believe they’re for goats. I bought them new at the co-op in town. They’re like geeen Cheerios. They don’t say anything about a certain animal. It just says castrating bands.

They do do have a note not to use on cattle over 250lbs. I thought that meant for smaller livestock but maybe I misunderstood.

Without seeing the goat it is hard to give you any advice. Can you feel the testicles? If it were me, I would cut off the area just above the band and work the testicles out and cut the cords. Is there a stockman around who can help you? If there is room to put another band above the testicles you can try that. Your other option is to take him to a vet. In all the years I had goats I never had the testicles slip out of the band. I am sorry I can't be of any more help. I am assuming you have vaccinated the goat for tetanus.

Strange. I have used the green bands for nigi's and pygmys for years and never had issues like testicles slipping out. Have they dried up at all? Is there any discharge or swelling? As you are not experienced with this, is there anyone local you can ask? If you can afford it, just get a vet to look. You definitely need tetanus and maybe am antibiotic depending what's going on. I feel funny asking but do you have pictures?

Yes, I believe what I’m feeling is the testicles. Someone asked if it’s just swelling that I’m feeling.... maybe. But I’m pretty sure it’s actually the testicles that have come out of the band. Since I’m new to this, I’m really not sure.

Thank you for asking about pix. I actually took some but then felt weird posting them. Lol! Let me know if more pix/ different angles would help.

Yes, he has been vaccinated for tetanus.

We have a friend that is a vet tech that said he would come help since the vet can’t come out for a while. But he won’t be able to come until later this week either and I’m stressing about the poor fella.

I bottle raised him and he’s so tame and sweet. This is breaking my heart.
