first time raising chicks...about 1-2 weeks old. I noticed a piece of hair sticking out from one of my chicks beaks and tried to pull it out, but there was resistance + I didn't want to hurt the chick. so I gave her a couple drops of olive oil and tried massaging to dislodge it and pulled it out some- I then cut the hair that was sticking out of the mouth. the chick was laying on the ground, almost as if dying and then I gave some water by dropping it in the mouth which seemed to help as the chick is now able to stand. however, the chick keeps opening her beak and tilting up, as if trying to swallow. I can no longer see any hair in the chicks mouth and the chick is standing alone in the brooding area while the other 5 are together. she won't drink water unless im dropping it into her beak and won't eat.. help ! what do I do! I don't know how I could possible find the hair and take it out now and I think it may be stuck in the chicks throat somehow.. im not sure what to do

Try to make sure that the hair did not get wrapped around the tongue. Look around in the beak to see if it is somehow around the tongue. It can cause the tongue to swell and cut off the airway. This is a common problem unfortunately.

How do you get the chick to hold still long enough to look in its mouth at the tongue. The same this is happening to my chick right now.

Hi Fishandchicks4, sorry to hear about your chick. This thread is over a year old, so you'll probably get more replies if you make your own thread. Best of luck!
