I have 8 baby chicks that are almost 3 weeks old and 10 babies that almost 5 weeks old in our garage. Separated into a brooder (for younger babies) and then another area with shelter and walking space for the older ones. No power. Temp gets to low 50s in the garage. No time for when power will be restored. Will they be okay?

Older babes have quite a bit of feathering.

Younger babes have feathers but aren't fully feathered yet and are significantly smaller but inside a complete brooder box with only ventilation holes and wire on half the top.

First time Chicken Mom here and I'm at work n can't leave to get to them but am watching our camera..which is how I knew we had lost power. Also has audio no alarming chirps yet.

Thank you. I'm just so damn worried & power company doesn't have any answers for restoration. We live in rural Idaho... so we aren't a priority. Transformer blew I believe.

My beautiful babes 💕🐣🥰

If your coop or run are completed, start taking them out for gradually longer periods of time over a week or so. Depending on your temperatures I'd take the 3 week olds too - they can acclimate to one another and to the temperatures together. After the week is up you can just leave them in the coop at night.

We will be finishing up the coop within the next week or so just final touches. Run as well. We are still getting into the low 30s at night. Highs this week are 68.

Ok, so that would probably be a bit chilly at night for the youngest ones at this time. The older ones should be fine with that.

Both groups can still go out during the day once either coop or run are complete, or you can set up a temporary run if available to supervise for safety reasons.
