My struggles continue. I hatched out 6 eggs from my flock, 4 were BO x SL Wyandotte, sex linked, 3 white males and one red female. 2 were BOx speckled Sussex, hoped both were female but one of them quickly seemed to be male with a large pink comb at 3 ish weeks(see photo comparison). However, now we are at week 4.5 and both seem to have combs of equal size though one is slightly redder/brighter than the other. Are they both cockerels? I would be pretty sad if 5 of the six I hatched were males. Is one of these a pullet?
Here is a comparison of them at 3 weeks:
Suspected cockerel early on “Chili”
Compared to “Cayenne”, who I felt sure was a pullet by comparison. Minimal comb and wattle development. I felt safe in my judgement.
UNTIL, recently. This is what they look like now at about 4.5 weeks (hatched Feb. 5)
Here is cockerel Chili (from the first photo)
And here is the pullet I had hoped for “Cayenne” but the comb and wattle development doesn’t seem far behind Chili… what do you guys think?? The comb is not quite as pink as it appears in the photo as some of that is the light coming through the skin, Chili’s is definitely redder and slightly bigger. But I’m still highly suspicious.
Here is a side by side that I couldn’t have planned better if I tried aside from being slightly blurry. The twins really cooperated on their poses. It is easier to see the differences. Chili is on the right, Cayenne is on the left.
Any chance Cayenne is a pullet, and not a more slowly developing cockerel?
