Somebody please help me. I just discovered my hen turkey like this! She was acting weird and holding her wing funny and to my horror - this is what I found!

She has not been out of the coop or pen and there is no way a predator could have gotten to her. Is this flesh eating bacteria?

I am so sick to- I love this bird she is so sweet. I REALLY do not want to destroy this bird,

Also she was fine 4 days ago - she had just laid her first egg

I would separate her, clean the wound thoroughly and apply neosporin triple antibiotic ointment without pain relief (very important it's the one without the pain relief) once or twice at day until it heals

As for what could have caused it, could one of your other birds have done it? What can happen is sometimes a bird will get injured and the others will pick at it. Of course bullying can be a factor but not necessarily

I can l came across an article just the other day about Gangrenous Dermatitis. It's hard to tell from your picture, it's showing up a little blurry on my end. But just Google it and compare images to your hen. Praying it's not that though for sure! 🙏🏼

Thank you I will look it up - I hope she can saved

Welcome to the site, so sorry this happened to your turkey. Birds are very resilient, but how is she acting? Eating, drinking? I agree with treatment as @FrostRanger said. The pictures are a bit blurry but I would not be inclined to think she has flesh eating bacteria unless it is putrid smelling. The wound looks like it may just be a bit dried out. Can you get some clearer pictures for us? Do you have a tom? This could be a mating injury. Once you get some clearer pictures, we can call on some educators if needed for more guidance.

Could you post a clearer picture? It's hard for me to tell what I'm seeing here. It looks very infected, but I can't be sure from the picture. Maybe have someone else hold her while you get a pic.

But I agree with what others have said so far. Definitely separate here and clean the area. I don't think Neosporin/antibiotic ointment could do any harm, even if I'm not seeing the picture correctly.

Sorry about your bird! I hope she can heal up soon.

How many roosters do you have?

I'd clean the wounds really well as suggested, then apply triple antibiotic ointment.

Separate her so others are not picking at her wounds. Is there a bad odor?

Is she eating/drinking and alert?

OK - I have separated her (put inside a large dog crate inside of the coop) and I gave her 20 mg of amoxicillin (oral) attempted to clean the wound as best I could (I just got off work and don’t have time to go to the store tonight) I used the last of the triple antibiotic cream I had. I will go the store in the am and buy saline solution and more triple antibiotic cream. She is still eating and drinking and she laid another egg! She has ribs showing in the wound. I have never in my life seen a more horrific wound! I can’t believe she is still alive but I am going to do my best to keep her alive. I will keep her separated and clean and pray! Thank you for all your help and information.
