Hello,

I got 16 baby chicks, which are now 2 days old (after removal from incubator). They are Bresse.

Tried sexing after hatching and today again. Problem is:

15 out of 16 have primary feathers way longer than the cover feathers.
1 out of 16 have equal sized feathers.

I took a picture from the internet to show what I am seeing:

The probability of 15/16 being female is 0.025%, so:
  • Am I messing up?
  • Is this breed not good for feather sexing?
Any ideas or tips that can help?

Hatching 15/16 pullets seems unlikely, but it's not impossible. I'm not sure if bresse can be feather sexed or not. Have you emailed the breeder you got the eggs from? Maybe they would know if their lines are feather sexable.

I can try to ask, even though these were my eggs. The originals parent eggs got them 2 years ago, but never too late for a question

I tried feather sexing my 13 chicks, 12 of them had the staggered feather lengths and 1 had equal sized feathers.
10 of them turned out to be cockerels and only 3 pullets:barnie

funny, I have incubated Bresse twice before and around 2/3 were cockerels. Hope its not a breed standard
