Hi,

I've never posted on a forum before, but I think we may have recently saved our at least extended our Rhode Island Red's (Lois) life with this.

She has occasionally had mild sour crop issues. She is about three years old, and has had a few bouts maybe the last two years. Not terrible, just once a year, maybe.

This month, June/July 2024, was terrifying for me! She seemed off. She was isolating and being lethargic. She seemed to be eating less and not her usual self. She's our meat eater, if you will, so she's not the main fruit lover, but she'll snack on blueberries and watermelon if she feels like it. She was not eating really anything.

When I went to pick her up, I noticed her crop was VERY squishy and full. Like a giant water ballon. When I palpated it, she started to puke up this brown liquid. Even with sour crop, she never did this. And, it didn't smell like it usually did.

Like all of you, I went online, read forums and advice columns, etc. My chickens are pets to me, I can't stand losing one.

I watched YouTube and did try a few times to make her regurgitate the fluid without aspirating her. It did help to get some of it out, but please take care, that can be very dangerous to them.

The biggest issue is that she refused to eat, or could not eat. She would reach down and puke/burp up and not be able to eat. Over about two weeks I would say she lost half her body weight. Our vet said she could come out, but even now, she would not be able to see her until into the future as I write this. Her comb started to shrink and she got even more lethargic and weak.

She did drink WAY too much water, if that's a symptom at all...

When she has had regular sour crop in the past, we have given her this regular, human probiotic from Amazon in the past. I am NOT an affiliate, I get no money from this. This is just advice and a helpful tip, not a cure.

My husband would hold her, I would dip the pill in olive oil and hold her mouth open and just push it down her throat until she swallowed it. We did this for the whole two weeks, and may keep doing it for a few more days.

She has recently started eating bugs again and some foraging. She even ate some chicken feed today mixed with water.

I am cautiously optimistic. She could pass tomoroow, or live another month or a year or two. I just hope this helps and if someone is struggling or needs ideas, here is another tool in our arsenol of chicken tips and tricks.
