Hello all!

When I was letting the chickens out this morning I noticed my hen, Stacy, was laying on the ground in the coop. This wasn’t particularly unusual, but she is a percher. While the other chickens were happily eating grass, she was standing underneath my deck. Her posture was awkward, as pictured below, and she was panting. She wasn’t hiding, staying relatively close to the flock, but it’s definitely clear that she’s not her normal self. It has been very rainy where I live and the temperature wasn’t extremely hot; 83° degrees to be exact. I think it’s important to note that none of the other chickens were panting.

Shortly after I noticed her poor posture I brought her to my deck to inspect her further. She is being very docile, much more than what is normal for her; she let me walk up to her and pick her up without running. I checked her crop and it seemed like she hadn’t consumed anything. I noticed her comb was powdery white but her wattle and face were still mostly red (They’ve since been changing between powdery white and a lightish red). Her comb doesn’t appear to be shriveled. I then gave her some probiotics (via a mix in powder), a small amount of plain Greek yogurt (which she wasn’t very interested in, but still ate some on her own), along with some food (with parsley, oregano, cinnamon, red chilli flakes, and some ground cloves), in which she ate a very small amount of, and electrolytes (mix in). I tried to encourage her to drink on her own by dipping her beak in the water; in which she drank but it didn’t stimulate thirst or independent drinking, despite panting. She began to breathe with her mouth open, no wheezing or coughing, and she would start falling asleep. She would breathe through her mouth in 10-15 second intervals. I set a big pan of cold water underneath the deck and put her feet in there; the panting stopped but then continued shortly thereafter.

Comprehensive list of symptoms:
- lethargic, more docile than normal
- lack of appetite and thirst
- powdery white comb
- depressed posture
- gape breathing
- panting
- watery poop
- droopy wings

Do you know if she laid an egg today? It could be an infection if she has shell less eggs inside her. First I would dose her with calcium citrate twice a day for a couple of weeks. Try to get her to eat whatever she wants, cooked meat, yolk, watermelon. Anything to boost her appetite.
