Hey BYC!
Many of you may have seen my post about my hen lily earlier this month about her suspected Gapeworm, turns out it was Gapeworm and the first round of dewormer was insanely effective, gonna give her another round
But today I have something that’s relatively minor. so I have a hen who’s kinda a mystery breed,I’d suspect a Welsummer. Her name is Ruby, she’s always been the mischievous/free bird of the flock.Shes made her whole lifestyle revolve around mischief and it’s hilarious nonetheless. however in mid January I began to notice something definitely wasn’t right, she’d been acting standoffish and lethargic for awhile. And here in Indiana I suspected it was normal behavior with the crazy weather fluctuations going on at the time, but one Friday I came home and noticed she looked pale and dehydrated, I immediately took her inside and separated her. And tried to feed her high water fruit and give her water. I felt a mass about the size of a ping pong ball in her abdomen and I immediately suspected egg-binding, to cut it short I left her overnight and the next day she didn’t pass it,after epsom salt baths, massaging, and supportive care, she Still didn’t pass any egg then I got to thinking it’s a lash egg.
You see last summer she laid a lash egg and had no issues whatsoever,I documented it and took a date and time since I knew lash eggs meant a clock was ticking on her life.Sne behaved normally for about 7 months (January was the 7th) and that’s when these symptoms showed up. So I immediately contacted a farm vet I volunteer/shadow with and she gave me some Lactad ringers and Ernofloxacin. I injected her with 40ccs of LR daily. About 7-8ccs every 2-3 hours and her severe dehydration gradually improved and the antibiotics took 2 whole series to help her.Her weight loss went away and she regained weight and her abdominal swelling went away and the mass doesn’t feel as large anymore.if anything I’d say it’s a little smaller than a ping pong ball. However after this mess that mass is still there but she’s acting totally normal.Ally he while I kept her inside in HVAC,her own drinker, food, dust bath and even daily cleanings of the tent I kept her in.Back to her mischievous self, eating and drinking and even defecating normally,no eggs but I don’t care if she doesn’t lay them ever again,my chief concern is if this sounds like she can live a healthy life from now on if this mass is still there? What are your thoughts guys?
